FMP – GOOD DESIGN EVALUATION

  • In what ways have you considered the sustainability of your project process and outcomes?

    I feel that the project itself (The Festival) is not the most sustainable. With a festival comes a lot of waste and littering although, Festivals are something that have been around for a very long time now and it is something that I feel is ethically and morally a good thing in my opinion due to the vast amount of people that it is encouraging to enjoy themselves outdoors.

  • In what ways have you considered the ethical implications of your project process and outcomes?

    Again sustainably this is not the best project, this is something I had half considered when creating such a bright and colourful design was the cost and impact of printing large poster etc in this design although I feel morally that a festival is a great way of getting young people outdoors.

  • In sustainability and ethical terms in what ways was your work in this project an improvement or a backward step for you as a socially conscious designer?

    I feel in this project although I had considered this the design for me could not suffer as a result of the ethical terms of the design, I fully appreciate and am very aware of this implications that the vast amount of waste, litter, paper and ink usage and travel etc that a festival would unfortunately create but I feel it is still a positive and all inclusive event which I personally think is needed in todays climate of negative issues so in my opinion the positivity of a great and cheerful event would out balance this in my opinion although I appreciate that perhaps there may have been a better way to create the designs to insure they were more ethical especially with the colours and printing but for this artwork I knew that this was needed to give the event its full potential.

  • What targets can you make at this point for your work in the future as a socially conscious designer?

    I think in future although I would never stunt the communication of a piece to insure it was more ethical I will probably give more thought to the paper and ink usage in brightly coloured and large scale advertising when creating this and also maybe consider for tickets etc how much waste this may cause. It may have been more beneficial to have had E-Tickets for a project such as this and also to cut advertising down to purely online and social media advertising.

FMP Evaluation

In what ways does the visual communication/message of the piece meet the needs of the brief?

In my opinion my final outcomes fulfils the needs of the brief for Live Nation by creating an effective brand to fit the ephemera of the event. Through research into existing branding of Live Nation festivals and also other inspiring festival branding designs I had researched and analysed with the Plus, Minus, Interesting technique to gain more understanding of how the branding for the festival should work. I feel I have achieved successful visual communication from the depth of research and experimentation into the colour pallet,shape and typeface choice to create the correct tone of voice.

I feel the logo and the colour palette alone give a young, dynamic feel and the aim when starting this project was to give a feel for the atmosphere of the festival through the tone of my design and I do feel as if the design does this successfully.

What are the strengths of the visual communication? Why?

I feel the visual communication through-out my final pieces is successful due to the depth of research, consideration of elements and experimentation to insure the colour pallete and branding design is as striking as possible whilst keeping it appropriate for the event. I feel the colour pallete and modern design was well considered and kept cohesive throughout all pieces of design which helps to give a cheerful yet modern and eye catching final piece which I highlighted in the first stages of the project was important to the progression of creating the final outcomes.

What are the weaknesses of the visual communication? Why?

I feel although the designs are successful visually the chosen contemporary style could exclude a portion of the audience. For example the bright, colourful, geometric and very modern design would appeal to a younger market but perhaps not an older market. This is something I did consider throughout my design process as I did experiment with different pattern for the accents of the branding (the pattern work used). Initially my inspiration came from 80’s artwork and festival fashion which I then refined to become more modern so although I did consider this drawback through out the process this could be considered a weakness.

In what practical ways could the piece be developed or improved?

I think that this branding has a lot of potential, throughout the process I have found that the branding works well with different types of ephemera and is vaguely easy to transfer onto different designs to insure that the brand identity is kept cohesive throughout all related ephemera, I think this makes a strong piece of design as it looks uniform and keeps a strong brand awareness.

I feel as if it may have been useful to have created a logo that was either more rounded or more square so that it did not look like a title but more like an icon although I am happy with the final logo and think it works well to communicate the feel of a festival and also looks dynamic and youthful, I did experiment with using a more soft and delicate design but decided that this was not successful in communicating the way the brief desired.

How was my time keeping?

Through-out the project I worked efficiently insuring I had deadlines to create different pieces to insure everything was broken down into small sections and everything was done in a timely fashion. I gave myself plenty of time on each task to insure that I was ahead of myself rather than behind and decided that I wanted atleast 10 days at the end of the project to go through and insure everything was refined and was as cohesive as possible, this would also give me time for any potential risk such as computer issues or printing issues and this would give me time to solve these issues. I insured that nothing was forgotten about by creating small checklists each day and having my blog open whilst I worked to insure everything was documented.

How was my analysis of the brief?

I insured that the keywords and pivotal communicative language was addressed in the pieces, I went reflected back to the brief as certain points in the project to insure I did not lose sight of what was needed to fulfil the brief.

How was my research?

I started my research by being quite broad and looking at the techniques in that where used in other festival branding and then refined to something that I knew I wanted to complete and looked more into different artists to refine and rounded style with different elements of inspiration, I think a positive of this project is that I looked into lots of different techniques and styles, some of which I ruled out although I think it is a positive to still have experimented with this to create a strong project.

How did I draw conclusions from my research?

My research helped me to decide what style would work for this design, Research also helps you too understand the trends in design for the time of the project to insure that you create something on a level with other design that is out there. When it came to the branding of the festival I used research a lot in making my decisions for weather my designs were effective. I also find that when you are working too closely with a design and watching something build together it is hard know if you are happy with it or if you are just bored of it. That is why it is always really important to always refer back to your research and also get outside opinions to insure that the work you are creating is effective and works well.

The first stage of my research was looking into London and looking at what the artwork would need to compete with and came to the conclusion that the designs would need to be bright,eye-catching and unique.

How did I use experimentation during the project?

As stated in the previous questions I experimented with different techniques such as detailed illustration and lots of different pattern work to create something interesting and unique through research working out what was already around that was similar or would complete. I also experimented with the colours to insure I communicated the piece accordingly. I spent a lot of time on the colour scheme and pattern work in the designs to insure that the artwork was as good as possible.

In what ways did I show that I had achieved the Learning Outcomes? How can I improve this next time?

(1)       Developed their awareness of the needs and requirements of professional practice, manifested in the ability to produce practical work of good technical quality.

I put a lot of focus on analysing the brief to insure in the first stages of the design to insure that everything would be covered in the finals. I also insured the technical quality of my pieces was up to scratch was firstly by insuring I was using the correct software for the pieces I was creating. Although this is actually something I have always done it does help with the quality of the designs. I always create my artwork in a larger document than needed, I will scale the document by double what I think I need (for example, I will create an A4 document in A3) as scaling up can be really bad for the quality of a piece where as something being scaled down will usually keep this quality.

(2)       Developed intellectual and conceptual involvement with their chosen subject area, including skills of project proposal, documentation of project development and the presentation of outcomes.

Throughout this project I was very committed to insuring that I was documenting my creative process and also the production of the pieces. I did these by using videos. I also find myself being in my own little bubble and forgetting about screenshots etc therefore I decided I would always have my screen recording every time I design and then just speeding the videos up and popping them on the blog to document everything I had done. This also helps immensely as it means I can look back on the changes I have made and I can watch if there was anything that I preferred or wished I had changed and help develop this. I wanted the subject to be heavily communicated in the designs therefore did some of the wall research into the links of fashion and atmosphere in the design which is always a factor you should consider with designs for a new event or brand.

(3)       Acquired skills of production and post-production including planning and budgeting.

During this project budget was not something I had considered to much although throughout the project I was surprised at the prices of getting tickets, VIP passes and even large scale posters, It did make me more aware of if I created this for a real brand how large scale and well funded festivals would need to be.
I did quite a lot of my planning through the research of this project. I also did a lot of planning through the sketching of the logo work and also the small deadlines that I put in place for myself to insure each item was created in time for print.

(4)       Developed written and oral skills of self-evaluation in relation to their practice.

Through the development of my blog posts and project you can see that I did a lot of revisions when it came to the ephemera. Once I had created the branding for the event these were quite simple to create although I insuring that everything was very cohesive and worked well together as a whole was quite difficult and I feel I had to be very evaluative of my own work to insure I made the correct decision. The first stages of the whole project were the most difficult decision wise because I knew that the colours and type and branding etc had to be continues but I just made sure I was practicing self-discipline to insure I was happy with the designs before finalising them.

(5)       Developed research skills in the area of contemporary professional practice.

I did this by continuously baring in mind about how the designs would work if I were to be working a long side a client. I think I made so many changes to all the pieces meaning that this would have been a difficult project to do in a professional manor although the outcomes may have come out completely differently although I feel the outcomes look professional and clean and would be effective for there use in a professional corporate world.

(1)       Developed skills of independent study, resource utilisation, problem-solving and decision-taking.

Through-out this project I had to make lots of executive decisions about the development of the designs, the festival names and colours and branding etc although I feel as if I helped myself do this by backing my own decisions with solid research and referring back to this in times of uncertainty about anything through the process.I utilised the resources of having the main audience for my piece in the room with me, Lots of my friends and peers are festival goers so it was a perfect opportunity to get some feedback which helped me to make some of my decisions.

(2)       Developed skills of thinking, analysis, reflection and evaluation.

Through out my blog you will see that each piece of design work I created was heavily analysed and evaluated before I was happy to call it a final piece.

(3)       Developed their ability to scan and organise data, abstract meaning from information and communicate knowledge in a variety of formats.

I continuously discarded ideas because it either did not communicate in the way I would have liked or it did not suit the needs of the brief or the audience IE. some of the pattern designs being to dated etc.

(4)       Developed their ability to apply knowledge and skills in the production of a self-initiated practical project.

The whole project was worked very independently and feel that my planning and production skills insured that everything came of clearly and the finals looked clean and very finalised.

(5)       Developed their skills of visual, written and oral communication.What parts of the project did I enjoy most? Why was this the case?

I enjoyed experimenting with different pattern techniques and also really enjoyed having nice amount of time to work on the project and to gain inspiration from different things. I also feel like this is a really contemporary piece and gives a bright and well thought out feel to my portfolio. I also feel like I challenged myself with this project due to the fact I feel it can be quite easy to create something clean and simple where as it is difficult to create something with style without it looking crowded,garish and badly designed.

At what times did I work best? Why might this be the case? How can I ensure that I work well at all times?

I always work best at the very beginning of a project as I get really excited and research so so much and try to think of an idea and get so excited to play around with ideas but once I have the branding such as when I had designed and decided on the branding etc I did lose interest slightly when using the same branding transferred and then when you know your nearing the deadline you then have the drive to get finished. I think there is always a dip in the middle of the project which is actually something that I feel I would like to try and change this for future projects, I feel a good way of of doing this would be to make a plan of action at the beginning of the project. Although I set myself smaller deadlines throughout the project I did not have a written plan and this might be a good idea in the future to have a written plan of action.

What areas inspired me? Why was this the case?

My designs for this project has inspired me to create more daring pieces and to challenge myself. I feel like this is the brightest and most bright and interesting branding I have created. A lot of the branding I have created in the passed have been contemporary and modern they have mostly been simplistic and very safe. I think using so many colours together an using something so bright made me frightened of the risk of having a garish and ugly final designs but I think with strong research and experimentation I actually found a way to make this the strength of the designs. I did experiment with a more soft, greyscale, delicate piece but just thought that the festival and the name etc lent itself to something more daring.

What areas were challenging or difficult?  Why was this the case?

I found choosing a pattern and branding for the project very difficult as you have to chose these two things to work really well hand in hand. This was hard to do successfully as I did not want to make the peice to busy, I wanted it too look interesting and modern and work nicely as a piece but again my research helped me to do this and see how other designers had achieved this and also referring back to this helped me gain an idea of how I could achieve this successfully.

How can I go about developing and improving the parts I found difficult?

I think in this case now that I have done it and made the decision to try more experimental designs and techniques I now know that I am capable of this and I can make more effort to try different design techniques and work hard to not be scared of it not working out.I also think that playing with new things is a successful way of getting ideas you wouldn’t usually go for. I think the key is just to play with ideas with out the concern of failing as this sometimes bring something different to your portfolio and makes you create something unique.

 

Website Development

I decided for the website design I would create a mock up using my chosen software of illustrator, I chose illustrator as I will be using vectored objects as the background and the logo was also still a vector so I thought it was best to do it in illustrator.
I started off with a document 1200 pixils wide as that is the right measurements for web design. I decided I would just create it and then make it larger with the “edit artboards” option and then I can change it according to how much space I need.

I started of designing the header..

I used the same accent pattern in the background and used essentially the same top design from the posters as I knew this included everyting I needed. I decided to make the website navigable I would include the buttons underneath and I made them match the logo with the same bounding box to make them clearly divided and show which one is which.

I beleieved the 3 buttons would be clear enough and included everything that the festival goers would need to know.

I was going to do it in the typeface that I used in the main text of the logo but actaully thought it did not look clean or easy on the eye at all, I thought it looked quite complex so I decided that it would be better to use the more simple typeface I had used and use the “Dry Brush” typeface as an accent font only.

I then knew I wanted the date and venue to be listed as one of the first respresentations as a conclusion result of my research into website designs.

At first I thought I would just have the same background but actually felt this did not work as well as I would have liked – It did just make it look like a stationary poster rathert than a website design.

I then devided the geometric pattern off and had a divide like I did with the tickets for the event.

I then decided I would do this in the same simple typeface and really liked the effect it gave, I think having the devision gave it more of a dynamic feel, I think it works nicely although I thought I might give it a shattered effect by having some of the fragments to give it almost a paralax moving feel rather than looking so static, I really did not like it at all. I thought it just didnt look as clean so I gave up on this idea.

I then decided I would continue the line up with the same effect, All the important large parts of info will be on the geometric background and then just have the normal basic parts of information on the white, I think this then breaks up the pages on the menu as seperate parts.

I laid out the line up in a paragraph as I decided that the stages and information would be on posters on the day and also would ussually be in a flyer or leaflet or on the app on the day which is not something I would be creating as this would be for the event itself.

I stated this in this in the download bar for the on the day app, I thought this would be a good idea and this is how I would develop the project, I would create an app that would navigate you around the website although I would not have time to do that this project I feel it is always interesting to have an idea of how the project could be developed the buttons would take you to your chosen app store.

I decided to make the site more interesting than just lots of type by rather than just listing the ticket sellers I opted for the logos which link to the websites they are part of so that people can link out to the box offices and it shows the ones that are trusted.
To insure that the logos where high quality and worked well I found good quality images of the box office logos and image traced them to the white so that they could be used on the background.

The last tab was travel information and also creating the footer of the page – I wanted the travel info to be very clear so I did this by creating titles of each way to travel and then used the triangles used in other designs to ensure that they were bullet-pointed and clear.

I then decided when people got to the bottom of the page they would be able to go back up to things they needed to look at.

I then exported the flat design  (final shown below) as a JPEG and placed it into INVISION APP.

I placed it into invision and then went into build mode. I added hotspots around the buttons at the top and placed anchor points in the sections of the page.

I did the same with the footer and placed hotspots on the buttons to go to different parts of the part – I also linked the Live Nation and the NMDESIGN credits to link to external URL’s to my website and also to Live Nations website.

I am really happy with the mockup of the website and think it is effective and works well with the rest of the ephemera. I beleive I have managed to keep it clean and simple whilst included all the needed information.

Website Research

Throughout this project I have been quite lucky as it is festival season so all the festivals have just bought out all there fresh branding and website designs.

Before creating the website I wanted to have a look into some other websites and look at the way they work, Now as a lot of other festival branding is, The website would be changing every year so I think it is best to go with a simple design.

Looking at the other festival websites this was a common theme. The wireless website starts with a very simple fading banner with the images from previous festivals, I will not have this option unless I use stock images so this is something I will need to work around due to this being a new festival.

The website is easily navigable, you click on the menu icon in the top right hand corner  and the menu comes up at the top  bar of the page, This then links you out to clear and consise pages.Screen Shot 2017-05-31 at 11.10.41.png

The line-up page is quite decrotive although something I did consider interesting was that they do not include the line up or any of the headliners on the first page, This is something that I think as a consumer would be my main focus of the festival and this is what I would be looking to see on the home page.

I like the way they have used images for the line up as it makes the artists easily recognisable and makes people more inclined to remeber who they are,I think this is a new touch although something that I did find was that scrolling through the website like this the images took up a lot of space and I was more interested on just seeing a list or maybe just the names with a few images around as I think if you like the artists you would know who they were as I tend to look through the lineup for the names I know and like.

I then took a look at the information page which I thought was really interesting, I thought it worked really well and although slightly more plain you can navigate to which ever bit you need without having to go through a whole load of information which I like, They have broken all the important into down into smaller sections which I think works nicely as a whole, I also think the icons help to make it more easily navigated although for want of a better word think they look slightly childish which is not something I would ussaully go for when targetting something at a teenage market.

I then looked at one of the other popular festivals this summer which is not held by Live Nation but is really interesting and they branding is very unique so I was interested into investigating how this worked in the website design.

The website is quite busy, I am not too sure about the subtitle across the sun as I think it is not very readable although I really like the fact that as soon as you open the page the first thing you come across was the date and the line up which I feel is an important element of the festival and I feel like on this first page alone I have all initial information I need about the festival without having to look for it.

When you click on the menu icon in the corner it takes you to the menu with all the information you might need.

I actually am not to keen on the menu tabs in these sites, I can understand that they probably do it so that the menu is not interfering with the design but I think I would rather have mine incorporated. I also think I prefer a site that scrolls rather than fades to another page, I like to feel like all the information is there on one page and you can just get to the parts you need by scrolling rather than having to clunk around buttons.

I found some designs online which show scroll websites,Which are websites that are built on one page and like the one below some have a top bar which include the menu and when you press buttons it shoots you down to which ever bit the info you are looking for is in, Not only does this help to create something flowing and cohesive but it makes the peice tie together and makes for easy navigation.

Ticket Development

So… I designed my tickets for the event based on the ticket website I was ordering them through to insure the sizing worked well on the final .

I made an artboard of the correct size – I then overlaid the template from the website of the tickets I wanted to order and made a PDF of the tickets I wanted.

I wanted the tear off at the end to stand alone as an explination of what the ticket was for. I added the ticket numbers and also the barcodes on the bottom right corner and then continued to start a design.

I started of with the same pattern as per my style guide but decided that this time I would have them slightly broken up – and give a more of a shattered feel – Mainly because I wanted to the end of the ticket to be black on white to make it more ledgable becuase it would need to be easy to scan etc for access to the festival and also needs to be hard to copy. I really was not too keen on how harsh to change looks and how seperate the left side & the right side were – I wanted it to flow a lot nicer.
I think I have everything I need on the ticket.

I really liked the way this looked and thought it was really functional and would work nicely. I am also thinking about continuing this shattered effect on other ephemera – I think this would be really interesting on things such as the website – It works really nicely to give a more gradial effect rather than just the pattern to block white, I am really happy with it.

LINE-UP POSTER DESIGNS

So for the line up poster I wanted something that followed the theme of the other poster but was slightly different so that it could be differentiated from the other one.

I decided I wanted to have the same sort of layout with the logo at the top but the line up’s for the 4 different stages – At this stage I just called the stages 1,2,3,4 but I will choose names for them once I have the layout.

I did start of by getting everything lined up and the artists into the stages I wanted. I did this with the template of the previous poster, This worked really nicely although I felt that is looked a little plain and also made it really hard to read because of the pattern.

I then decided to lay over a faint white background over & then made the type the dominant part of the design by making it the purple colour.

I liked this but I thought it looked slightly to faded and not strong enough therefore I decided I would cut the logo out of the shape I used so that the pattern would come through differently.
I am still undecided if I want to use the more simple typeface in for the subtitles – I think it looks more clean …

I did this by using the pathfinder tool and then removing some of th buts inside the typeface leaving a few brush strokes to keep the same effect as the main posters.
I also added a boarder of the background pattern to give it more of the brand identity .
I then had an idea to give a 3d feel so I added some of the shapes over the edge so that it wasnt so broken up and this is something I did on the first poster aswell so thought this would work really nicely.

I am really happy with this and think it fits really nicely with everything else so I will be making either my tickets or my leaflets next.

I will be using the same principles of the brand but need them to be functional.
