Evaluation

I started this project of the same as I start EVERY single project, By reading and analysing the brief and then by doing some very thorough research into the subject field that I will be exploring so of this particular project it was Double Page Spreads and Environment Photography. This research as usual really aided me in enabling me to create more professional and well communicated final visual. My finals where heavily influenced by the research into interesting double page spreads that I conducted therefore I found it appropriate to show a blog post showing this.
Something I was also very inclined to do with this brief was gain a lot of initial material and ideas at first, having a bank of photography is always a good thing as a designer anyway but doing this sort of broad development work is the way my design process works as it gives me a lot of options to chose from and also insures that my work is the pick of a large bunch.I did a lot of research into layout design before and after creating my finals, I firstly wanted to look at this to gain information on how I could make my piece communicate well and look professional and after to insure that my piece would fit some of these layouts and to insure I was working to a high quality standard.I was very keen to insure that my pages had a good flow to them and that they were very cohesive with each other, Something I did to insure this was to match the shapes and the layout, I used 2 columns on both pages to insure this read easily and fluidly something I also did that to use the angles of the photography to reflect a match in the second piece, As you can see in my finals the image on the first page has a building that slices across the side of the page although this image does not bleed of the page,I left a boarder to reflect the left hand page and the layout of the text and title of the intro page. The second page was built/created with the intention of matching this and making the two pages look cohesive and work well together layout wise. I wanted to also insure that the body text had a nice feel and wanted it to be very clear and legible therefore after trying the text over the image this was not an option. After creating an array of different double page spreads I selected these to as I felt they worked well together and also that they fulfilled the brief effectively as the photography and layout is the forefront of this piece and I feel this shows clearly in comparison to some of the other options I had explored where by I felt they were not to the standard I would have liked. Something that I feel is not a major strength of my final pieces is that although I did try hard to perfect the body text I am still not happy with this,This is more learning how to do this and fine tuning my skills in this particular area and this is something I will be working with specifically in the next project and hopefully perfect my skills in this area.Other than this my research has bought me to a good outcome that I feel work well along side each other and would work well for there purpose, I am happy with this final overall although there are some things I would change.

Justification Of Text – Fine Tuning Adjustments

I wanted to insure that for this project my layout was perfect, Something I felt from my research was evident was that all the well made ones looked a lot more professional so I wanted to take a very detailed approach to my text etc.
Here is what I have done to be able to justify my text therefore making it easier to read.Screen Shot 2016-05-19 at 17.22.33.png

You can see here from this close up image that there is a lot of uneven spacing, The first thing I did was to go into text > paragraph styles and change the settings for my minimum maximum and desired spacing for my words within a paragraph.Screen Shot 2016-05-19 at 17.50.35.pngThis still does not enable you to have the perfect spacing so I manually went through and adjusted some of the spaces within the paragraph to get a good effect, Im still not 100% happy with this but sometimes you have to make a decision between having big and small spaces and put up with a slight bit of imperfection.

I do feel that its best to have smaller spaces rather than lots of large spaces as its easier to read and also having huge white spaces does interfere with the overall layout of the design.

London Page 2 development

This is a second idea I have had, A more free form layout and seemed more nataraul, I really like this but really not keen on the left page, I think its far to crowded and does not look right at all,I think I will place the right page with the left page of the one before and see if these look balanced.

I do not like the balance of these pages, I feel the initial page was so much more clear, I really am thinking that these pages need to be more cohesive with the other page this is something I will be working on in the next one, Possibly I feel using lots of small images makes it too busy and not enough like page 1 and these where my results..

I am not keen on this version AT ALL I feel that it is far to broken up and looks like 2 separate pages.

Screen Shot 2016-05-18 at 16.38.01.pngSo I tried spreading the image across both pages, I am still not keen on this as this makes the writing to complicated to read then I devised this final one from this feedback I got and I really like it I think it works a lot nicer than anything else.It was inspired by the research I did and it made me think about having it across both pages but having blank space to have the text,Im really happy with this final although I will still be editting it to make sure that the layout and justification of the text is to a good standard.Screen Shot 2016-05-18 at 16.28.16.png

My Influences and responses

I thought it would be interesting to look and see how much I was inspired by my influences and research in this project so I have gone back to my initial research post and now will put some of the way I responded from this.

I think its quite clear to see how I have responded from this in my final first page, I really liked the way that both of these had a title page with predominately text and also that they followed the layout I had researched in my previous blog post,ad you can see my work is very heavily influenced by my research although is not copying my research it is definitely a response rather than a copy,This is how most designers work and is the primary use of research.

This image shown below really inspired my second page,Mainly because it inspired how I did not think to place the image across the crease of the page, I also liked the fact that the text stood alone and by the side of the image and made it  much much easier to read.

Article Text for DPS

Page One Intro

London, From Trafalgar Square to  Tower Bridge it is absolutely jam packed full of inspiration. From sitting by a quite lock at docklands to whizzing through the busy city in a black cab, life in London could not be more varied.Whilst weaving through the London traffic of One Canada Square, I noticed how the morning sun was sneaking through the buildings and reflecting perfectly of the windows, The blue sky peaking through the skyscrapers, Who said you can’t enjoy an english summer in Central London?
Weather you are in London to live, work or play it means something different to everyone, You can literally walk 40 metres and be in a completely different environment in London.
Different Ethnicity’s, Buildings,Sounds and vibes which means plenty of things to inspire photographers, designers and artists.

Page two article

“London is so suffocating”, this is the opinion of a lot of people but maybe they don’t see a side to London that I do. Wandering through Kew Gardens and Sitting on a bench at docklands watching the world go by you could be in a completely different city, It is so calm and tranquil. The moment I saw the cable cart I thought of the brilliant photograph opportunity that it presented, I wanted to portray London in a new way, The first and second picture where taken on two separate days, One sunny and in the heart of the city and the second on a raining day from the Emirates Air Line From Docklands to the O2 .
This was a great way to get unique imagery and also to see London from a new perspective.I used my Nikon DSLR 3600 for most of these long shots I have used manual focus.I used auto focus for the first shot shown on page 1 as it was a quick shot so I needed it to focus quickly and efficiently to capture the inspiration I felt when I saw the sun peaking through the skyscrapers.
As you can see my imagery reflects two very different weather conditions but that is London & something I am keen to reflect. The rain was almost soothing tapping on the windows of the cable car and I loved the feel of the rain unfocused in the front of the image.

This panning shot shows the variation of London in one photography, It shows the calm and serine background of the water with the private boats that people flout down the thames in, The high rise building packed in right up to the water line of the left and the flats and shops on the right, As you stare up into the sky I notice the crains representing the ever building city of London.

Creating my second double page spread I thought this should be a more informative page but also wanted to keep it clean and well laid out with the same 2 box methods of keeping a boarder round the outside to keep it looking clean and balanced.Screen Shot 2016-05-16 at 18.30.53.png

With the layout I have used 2 banner shaped images that reflect each other on each page, On the left collage page I have included 3 smaller thumbnail images which I have then reflected in the other page to insure that I had balance within the piece itself. I kept the boarder and the little indents to keep the two pages consistent.
